The demand for durability is reshaping the accessible jewelry market. Three finishes compete for reference status: gold-toned stainless steel, vermeil, and classic gold plating. Their technical composition explains significant gaps in price and longevity.

The PVD process on stainless steel

Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) fixes a thin gold or gold-toned layer directly onto stainless steel inside a vacuum chamber. The result resists water, sweat, perfume, and impact, with color retention superior to classic plating over time, at a contained price point.

Vermeil: the noble base

Legally defined (in the US and EU) as a minimum of 2.5 microns of 10k+ gold over solid sterling silver, vermeil combines the intrinsic value of silver with the shine of gold. It's the most balanced finish between budget, aesthetics, and longevity, provided you check the plating thickness the brand advertises.

Classic gold plating: proceed with caution

Applied over a brass or base metal core, standard gold plating sometimes falls below 1 micron in thickness. The gold then wears off within weeks of daily use, revealing the base metal, which can be allergenic for sensitive skin (nickel content).

How to read a product spec sheet

  • Check the thickness in microns: 3 microns minimum for daily wear
  • Check the base: sterling silver (vermeil) holds up better than a brass alloy
  • For intensive wear with minimal upkeep, PVD steel remains the most rational choice
